Review

This was one of those films that had so much potential of being the next great low-budget horror flick of the year. Considering the premise, it would have been a sure success. Alas, it was not to be, and All Superheroes Must Die is one of the most dreadful schlock fests I’ve seen this year.  The film is plagued with a poor cast (aside from James Remar who is the ONLY good thing about the film), poor directing and lazy script. The film feels rushed and in turn, it suffers majorly. What could have been a great film is a horrible entry in the horror genre. I would describe the film as Kickass meets Saw. Now with that being said, you might think that it would a cool little flick to watch.  Unfortunately that couldn’t be further from the truth. The game is poorly executed and every trap is basically explosives, it’s very impressive and ends up being boring. There was one game that I liked, and even that one was pretty bland. The film looks cheap, feels cheap and it doesn’t feel like there was any effort put into it. I love low-budget horror, some of the better films of the genre are shot with a shoestring budget, but most filmmakers are passionate about their work, and try to create something that sets them apart from other directors in the genre. Director Jason Trost who also blessed us with a lame performance as one of the superheroes direction is sloppy and he clearly was last in his class in film school. If the project would have had the influence of someone more talented such as Don Coscarelli, Adam Green or Ti West, then maybe this film would have succeeded. As a whole, the film’s good ideas are sunk by a sloppily written script. All Superheroes Must Die fails to entertain, and James Remar as the villain Rickshaw is good here, but sadly he can’t redeem the sheer awfulness of this film. A big disappointment.

Review:

The Collection is one of those sequels that simply builds on the first film, and reinvents the formula to create something special. This is the sequel to The Collector, and features the titular character doing what he does best, collects bodies. This is a fun, entertaining splatter fest that will surely appeal to fans of the original, and this is just as good in terms of a good mindless horror yarn. In terms of original ideas, the film really is a refreshing take on what the first one did, and expands on the story. This is a very entertaining film that will surely delight horror fans.  The film has everything that made the first one so much fun. This is a disturbing, twisted ride that has enough tricks up its sleeves to make it a worthwhile second feature.  The gore and traps are the standouts of this film, and aside from the Saw films, The Collector along with this sequel are the best in the Torture Porn genre. This is one of those films that will only appeal to fans of said genre, as really this isn’t for the faint of heart. Although it doesn’t reinvent the genre entirely, there are still plenty of good ideas on-screen to make The Collection a good film to watch.  Fans will love this one and The Collector is as twisted as ever as he is now a serial killer and hunted down by the authorities. Director Michael Dunstan does a good with this entry and though it has its faults, this is an exercise in demented horror that pays off due to its strong sense of visuals and kills that is a must for any demanding horror fan. The Collection is a good sequel that is on par with the original and delivers everything that you’d expect from this twisted series.

Cube (1997)

Tagline: Fear… Paranoia… Suspicion… Desperation

Directed by:
Vincenzo Natali

Produced by:
Mehra Meh

Run Time:
90 Minutes

Released:
September 9, 1997

Review:

A brilliant Canadian Sci Fi Horror film, Cube is one original film, full of terror, thrills and suspense. The cast is of course composed of unknowns, but really that’s what makes this film even better. The film is a thrilling ride from start to finish and the tension build steadily to the wicked climax. Great acting, and directing are apparent in this film, and what really makes Cube soar above all other Horror films of this era (1997 was the big boom in teen horror) is the absence of terrible horror clichés found in films of this era. It’s a totally original film that returns to good old-fashioned thrills and suspense to create High tension and horror. Brilliant. Unfortunately the sequels weren’t as excellent or elaborate as this first entry, but at least they managed to create something brilliant with this film. This could almost be seen as an inspiration to Saw. What’s very interesting is that there is no logical answer to why they’re in the Cube; the why is never given and the people who created the cube is never explained. The only thing that are hinted is just wild guesses (the government is behind the cube, etc) The way the survivors of the many traps within the Cube try to ultimately figure out how to escape the Cube. Cube is a simple yet effective story. Many people view this as a thinking man’s horror film and as a film it leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Which may end up being frustrating to some. However this is one awesome and unique horror film. Cube is a solid, gripping horror film with plenty of creative elements to keep asking questions long after you’ve seen it.

Review:

First sequel to Cube is actually pretty good. Though far from perfect, this film does have its moments. The concept in this sequel was really interesting, and I thought it was a good departure from the original. Though the same ideas, there is enough new ideas to make this an entertaining sequel. The film is terrific in its conception. The ideas for its plot are wonderful, which in turn keep you interested in the film. What’s great about this sequel is the fact that they build up on the ideas of the first film, but create something totally new in the process. The acting here is pretty good, and each actor deliver something good on-screen. The film is worthwhile sequel and the director creates a unique spin on the Cube. What I love about this series is the fact that it’s low budget, but the filmmakers use a mediocre budget to create something terrific. For the budget, this film looks great. Fans of the original should check this film out, though it’s not as great as the first, Cube 2 still manages to deliver good shocks,. and good entertainment. What makes this film watchable in the end is the concept behind the cube, which is enough to keep you involved from start to finish. All in all, this is a good enough sequel to the original Cube film, and far better than the third and final entry in this trilogy, Cube Zero. This film has enough good elements to appeal to fans of the first film.

Review:

Third entry of the Cube series is a prequel to the original. This was a decent entry in the series, but it felt even more like a B movie film. Yes, the first two were low-budget affairs, but they were creative, and unique. Exploring ideas that were really intriguing in the horror medium. Cube Zero is an interesting, but flawed prequel. Compared to the first film, this film really is inferior in terms of quality, and there’s plenty of room for improvement in this film. The ideas expressed in this prequel are interesting, but lack something to really make this a standout film in this trilogy. The acting is pretty decent here, nothing ever great. The film had some good ideas here, but at time you can see the film missing the mark and what could be a good prequel ends up being a decent Sci Fi horror flick. This film is never anything great, and it’s a shame because this film could have been a memorable prequel. This film could be much better, and it’s a shame that there was such a lot of potential here to make this a great prequel, but in ends up being a decent film. Don’t expect much from this one, expect to be mildly entertained, and you won’t be disappointed. However you’ll realize that there’s something missing from this film to really make it standout. As a whole, this prequel is simply a decent prequel with a lot of potential to really make it great. Unfortunately the scripts limitations prevents this from being a terrific film.

Review:

The Collector is one messed up horror film. The film makes Saw look like a Disney film. Almost. This horror effort is a new breed of the “torture porn” genre of horror. The concept is terrific. The film takes ideas from the Saw franchise and amplifies the use of the traps even further. This is a bone chilling film that is very unnerving and disturbing. I don’t see why this film has gotten so much flack; it is a very good film that will appeal to fans of the Saw series, Hostel films and other films of the “torture porn” genre. The film will leave you on the edge of your seat till the very end, and there is constant fear and dread throughout the film. The Collector is not a film for the faint of heart. The film will keep you on the edge of your seat, and it delivers the scares, the unnerving viewing experience that you’d expect. The film has its flaws of course, but for the most part, it succeeds at delivering good enough tension, and horror for you to be entertained and feel uncomfortable. This is a well done, well acted horror film, and it doesn’t deserve the bad rep it has received. The film is good, thrilling and very disturbing. The Collector possesses key elements that should appeal to diehard fans of horror. This is an underrated film that, if you have chance, you should pick up and give it a shot. A thoroughly disturbing viewing experience awaits you with The Collector.

Run Time:
91 Minutes

Released:

Review:

The Devil’s Chair is one of those films that has a good concept for a film, unfortunately , the filmmakers don’t know how to build up on the idea and ends up with a really bad film. This film sucks. The film seemed interesting, and I thought the film had an interesting idea for a film. Unfortunately, the film just didn’t deliver. The Devil’s Chair is an awful film that has a poor plot. I felt that film was poorly made, and that director Adam Mason directed a film that is simply bland, tired and overall unimpressive. I hated the film, and thought it was a mess. There are many sequences that simply don’t make sense, and frankly don’t add anything of interest to the film. This film might have worked if the script would have been worked on a little bit harder. There was some interesting ideas for a film, but none seem to really work. The Devil’s Chair was a bad horror flick with a poor cast, poor directing and a poorly constructed script. This was boring, and The Devil’s Chair was simply a forgettable film not worth your time. I thought that the film was a missed opportunity to do something truly memorable. The film tried too hard to deliver on the gore with little emphasis on horror. Adam Mason is terrible director in the genre. This film just goes to show that he isn’t capable of directing a film that has genuine terror or suspense. That’s what this film lacks.

Saw (2004)

Tagline: How much blood would you shed to stay alive?

Directed by:
James Wan

Produced by:
Gregg Hoffman

Run Time:
103 Minutes

Released:
October 29, 2004

Review:

Saw is a terrific horror film. For me, when this film came out, I thought it was a return to form of the somewhat dull and dead horror genre. This film injected new blood in a tired out genre. Saw is a sick, twisted horror film and it’s awesome. The story line is very original, a killer forcing his victims to play sick games so that they can learn the meaning of life and appreciate their lives even more. A film that doesn’t shy away from violence and gore, Saw definitely emphasizes on providing the viewer with healthy doses of both. A terrific, original film, Saw delivers something that has long been absent in the horror genre, originality. This is the start of one of best new horror franchises since the 1980′s. I warn you, this ain’t for the faint of heart. Saw is a nightmare of a good time. A truly original story is found within and the film has some terrific and ingenious tense moments. One scene in particular is the reversed Bear trap scene. Totally insane in conception. Saw is the perfect Horror film for these time, in the sense that most studios tend to remake classic which turn out to be crap, this film and the sequels that followed are truly something that’s much-needed in this tired genre of cinema. Saw is truly terrifying, original and fun. The best part about this series is that it brings a much-needed type of killer in the genre, a killer with say, “actual” motives for killing his victims. Saw is a refreshing franchise in a tired genre where people only want cheap scares to thrill them. Saw offers genuine tense shocks and is one of the best films to come in the Horror genre in recent memory. Truly unnerving Horror at its best.

Saw II review

Saw II (2005)

Tagline: Oh yes… There will be blood.

Directed by:
Darren Lynn Bousman

Produced by:
Gregg Hoffman

Run Time:
93 Minutes

Released:
October 28, 2005

Review:

Saw II is a tense, thrilling sequel to the original Saw. This time, Jigsaw raises the bar, and sets up a group of people in a house set up with sick games to test their will to live. An even more deranged film than the first, Saw II is a wild ride. The traps are even more elaborate and there’s even more gore and violence in this one than the first. Saw II is a film that will most likely make you squirm in your seat and look away. This sequel is a terrific follow-up to the first one, and as the film unfolds we get a better look at what Jigsaws plan is. A film that delivers everything you’d expect, Saw II delivers and then some. The film will keep you on the edge of your seat til the end. Even more bloody, violent and gory, Saw II will definitely make fans of the first very happy and will appeal to a broader audience, however it’s weaker than the first, but by no means is it bad. Still a strong film, Saw II definitely builds up on the success of the first and is a more diabolical game as there are more subjects to be tested. Saw II is an awesome follow-up, and has everything that has made the first one so good, but in a way they slightly missed something to make it truly unique. But with that aside, Saw II is still an awesome film to watch with friends, and the gore is plentiful. Aside from the flaws such as it felt slightly rushed, and we knew right from the start what was going to happen, this is still a solid film. Saw fans will love it

Tagline: Suffering, You Havent Seen Anything Yet

Directed by:
Darren Lynn Bousman

Produced by:
Mark Burg

Run Time:
108 Minutes

Released:
October 27, 2006

Review:

Saw III is a terrific and even more brutal entry in the Saw series. The traps are even more elaborate and the games are even more twisted. At the time, this was the most intense Saw released. Although not as strong as the second, this film still delivers on what you’d expect. Every traditional Saw element is here, complete with a jaw dropping Climax. Saw III is an ugly-looking horror film, and the sets are dark, gritty and ominous. This time Jigsaw has taken a doctor hostage and she has to keep Jigsaw alive until her estranged husband makes it through the maze of twisted games alive until he reaches his final test. Saw III is a very good, thrilling film and has plenty of effective moments to keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing till the end.
